Information On Bow Ties For Men

By Mattie Knight

A bow tie as a type of necktie entered the fashion scene back in the early nineteenth century. It is thought to be a modification of the cravat, a predecessor that originated in the Croatian army. By the mid-1880s, it was a staple male fashion for formal occasions. Bow ties for men are still gaining popularity in certain societies especially as they continue to undergo modification and change. In societies that used them long ago, they are regaining popularity.

Bow ties underwent change in both function and form. It transcended the common and traditional stereotype that it is intended for formal occasions only partially because of the overwhelming acceptance people gave it when it was first introduced. The old mindset in people has changed. The formal stereotype is dying out gradually. Originally, the product was not meant to be used for what it is being used for today. For example, it is becoming a common street style, uniform, and a key celebrity fashion.

The rigid sartorial laws of former years do not apply anymore to these ties. They have become a fashion that people from both genders enjoy and are happy to be associated with. Any stylistically savvy person would be happy to include this piece of garment in their unique wardrobe any day of the year. Many celebrities like it and are seen every day wearing it in public occasions.

The tie is made in the form of a ribbon. The ribbon is tied in a symmetrical fashion around the collar with the two ends creating a loop. Traditional versions require the wearer to tie them because they are made in the form of strips. They are commonly called self-tie, tie-it-yourself, or freestyle. On the contrary, are made in an already tied fashion to save the wearer the trouble of tying them.

The fabrics used to make the product are many and vary. However, most of them are made from cotton, polyester, silk, or a combination of more than one fabric in different proportions. Wool is commonly used for making the ordinary four-in-hand neckties, but its use in making bow ties is very limited. Modern products are tied using the ordinary shoelace knot.

Western societies are more accustomed to ordinary neckties. They are commonly worn at schools, business meetings, and formal functions. The bow tie on the other hand is slowly stealing the audience in fun-formal events like cocktail parties and dinners. A formal look can still be maintained by wearing the tie with a suit.

Today, two major types of this product are in existence. This two forms are ready-tied and tie-it-yourself. Ready-tied types are considered to be for people with little preference and experience in this line of products. They are viewed as armature in certain events and occasions. Ready-tied types may have clip-ons for clipping onto the collar. That way, they do not go around the neck when worn.

Self-tie models can be placed into two other sub-categories, that is, bat wing and thistle or butterfly. Besides the two, there are other shapes in use too. People choose the shape of their tie depending on their sense of style and preference.
