Choosing The Right Chemotherapy Headwear

By Kristen Baird

Chemotherapy treatments are difficult for many patients, although a lot of patients agree the most troublesome part is the side effects. Hair loss is one particularly bad effect. The hair eventually regrows after treatments have stopped, but what do you do in the meantime? Although some patients choose to leave their balding or bald heads proudly uncovered, some people prefer not to advertise their illness. Head coverings provide a way to cover the hair loss while also providing protection against the weather elements and harmful ultraviolet rays. There are a variety of chemotherapy headwear options available.

Scarves are one common option, particularly for women who are experiencing scalp sensitivity. The fabrics are often soft and light. There are a lot of colors and patterns to choose from. For patients who prefer not to worry about trying a scarf, there are pre-tied types too. It is best to choose blends or cottons so they do not slide around on your head.

Many cancer patients opt for using hats. In this group, there are a large amount of different types available. Berets, Fedoras, and Brimmed hats are often more fashionable and can even add a more decorative touch to your wardrobe. They are also common choices by women because they provide more femininity. Baseball hats are often chosen for the more relaxed appearance and are suitable for men and women. If a softer fabric is what you desire, you can also choose a beanie or turban.

Wigs are another group of options for patients. A wig can be synthetic or made from donated human hair. They can be short or long, curly or straight, and everything in between. Many people choose a hair color, length, and style that closely resemble what their own hair looked like before the treatments began.

Shopping for covering pieces can be difficult and confusing. The first step is to understand that not all coverings will be created the same. There is a difference in design from the ones made for people with hair and the ones made for people who have lost hair. It may help to shop for pieces from shops that carry coverings designed just for this purpose. Keep in mind that you will need a piece that is designed to reduce sensitivity and scalp irritation.

The lifestyle you have will have a large influence on the types of coverings that you choose. Be sure to account for your daily activities, but also the activity levels you have on treatment days. If you tend to be more active, choose pieces that will not require you to constantly reposition or that move around too much. Additionally, you should choose pieces that suit your style and mix well with your wardrobe selections. They should feel natural to you, not as though you need to force yourself to wear them and be uncomfortable.

Choose a balance between simple and dressy or decorative. Simple head coverings are ideal for days when you are getting treatment or are just running errands because they are generally the most comfortable. The more dressy and decorative covers are ideal when you have special occasions or you just want to add a special touch to your outfit.

Chemo and hair loss do not mean you need to resign yourself to staying indoors or to be ashamed and uncomfortable with your appearance. The right head cover can help with this. You gain some new accessories and the ability to carry on with as much of a normal life as possible.
